PROPERTIES OF BEE POLLEN

Bee pollen. Pollen is collected from flowers by bees and then extracted from bees at the hive entrance using a pollen trap. The pollen is collected on a daily basis depending on the humidity and is then frozen or dried.

Bee Bread. Bees store some of the pollen collected in cells in the hive for use during times when there is no pollen avaible. The pollen is preserved in the cell by covering it with honey. This pollen is called Bee Bread.

What are the common traits of Pollen?

Pollen all differ in constitution, coming from various species of flowers. All contain Lacto-bacilli. They all have high fiber content, important for digestion and absorption of nutrients. All pollen types are highly concentrated in anti-oxidants which vary in composition depending upon pollen sources.

With one choice of flower, do you get Pollen from one flower only?

Depends, when for example you choose chestnut pollen for circulatory condition, you get pollen which will be dominant in chestnut but may also may contain a minor percentage of other pollen types like dandelion or alfalfa for example. The synergy of all these differences is in fact complementary in its usage.

Can pollen be frozen and defrosted several times?

There is no risk by freezing and defrosting the product several times. Pollen pellets are free of pathogenic harmful bacteria and the pellets have very low water content, so they cannot burst during the freezing/defrosting process. For example, under natural conditions, willow pollen survive happily in winter, freezing during night time with temperatures dropping down to minus zero and then defrosting during the day without any harm.

Is this pollen considered Organic?

This Pollen comes from wild plant flowers growing in perfect natural conditions. It is not qualified as organic but is harvested freshly under the cleanest conditions possible.   It has been tested during the import process by AQIS (quarantine) and found to be free of pesticides.

in fresh frozen state as dried it looses most of it's properties:

Pollen properties vary greatly according to the species of flower they came from.

But there are general properties relevant to ALL types of pollen.

Pollen is considered as a Super Food containing the entire range of nutrients required for human beings.

Bee pollen can contain an average of 20% protein.

Plus,

Large vitamin B complex for the balance of the central nervous system.
It can be considered to be a Probiotic food. It has an excellent regenerative and cleansing effect on the guts.
It contains plenty of Fiber to facilitate digestion.
Increase vitality and energy, good ratio of carbohydrates.
Rich in minerals included Iron which helps the restoration of red blood cells and good oxygenation. (Magnesium, calcium, manganese, zinc, copper).
Because of its sexual nature (containing hormones), it has an effect on the human reproductive system.
It is best used as a preventive treatment to keep our bodies at an optimum level.
One of the richest food in anti-oxidant, it contains a large amount of flavonoids.
Antibiotic properties.
Anti inflammatory.
Tonic, nutritive, trophorestorative: speeds the healing process, better recovery.
Rutin increases the capillary resistance, circulatory stimulant, hypotensive.
And much more.

A word on dried Bee Pollen to demystify:

Dried bee pollen lose their properties when it is dried, no effect on the digestive system, lacto-bacteria are dead, no anti-bacterial activity. It is like taking a dead product....

Please note: Due to state importation regulations, fresh frozen pollen is not available for shipment to WA or Kangaroo Island.

We  choose Percie du Sert Products for the high quality of their products, we have tried them on ourselves with great satisfaction. Their method of processing bee pollen is unique. the pollen is frozen at collection and packed in a nitrogen filled package, oxygen is excluded, eliminating decay. This process allows the pollen to be presented as close to its pure state as possible. Percie du Sert is willing to develop Australian frozen fresh pollen in the future.  No Australian made frozen fresh pollen products are available.

This Bee pollen is supplied  sealed in a punnet to maintain freshness. When you receive the pollen punnet freeze it as soon as possible  to preserve its freshness.

Because of the low water content in this bee pollen, it can be refrozen without altering the quality or taste of the pollen

The Role of Fermenting Agents in Bee Pollen:

Article : The Probiotic Effect of Rock Rose Pollen Frozen in a Fresh State
Prof. Jost Dustmann (Germany)

* More than 30 million years ago bees developed a method of preserving a food that is richer in protein than meat or fish at a temperature of 36°C in an extremely humid atmosphere.
* Lactobacteria and yeasts in fresh rock rose pollen serve to restore the balance of lactic acid bacteria in the right colon in humans - a protective effect on health.
* Fresh pollen has a protective effect: pathogenic bacteria cannot multiply.
* With dry pollen there is significant growth of pathogenic bacteria. We cannot therefore expect any protection of the intestinal flora from dry pollen.

Fresh Pollen is FULLY digested:

* When bees collect pollen from flowers it is a light powder. They form this powder into pellets by moistening it with nectar, which is 30 to 40% sugar.
* This sugar is gradually absorbed by the pollen cells.
* When the pollen is placed in water or saliva it absorbs water and then bursts in a process known as osmotic shock.
* Bee bread is pollen that has been lacto-fermented in the hive.
* The cytoplasm which is released from the pollen cell and the antioxidants on its exterior are digestible. * Only the cellulose structure will be evacuated in the stools. It is not at all necessary to lacto-ferment pollen in order to render it digestible.
* Bee bread, like fresh pollen, has high nutritional value but is very difficult to harvest. It is a highly fermented product that is rich in B group vitamins and vitamin K (necessary for blood clotting).

Patrice Percie du Sert, an agricultural engineer and professional beekeeper, invented and patented a technique in 1994 that allows all the nutrients in fresh bee pollen to be preserved. Now acknowledged as an authority on bee pollen, he is regularly invited to conferences on diet and foods with an exceptionally high nutritional value. He also works with several research centres, in both the private and public domain, investigating the effects of fresh pollen on chronic diseases in humans. At fifty-eight years old Mr Percie du Sert performs each of his various roles of company director, researcher, beekeeper and teacher, with formidable energy; in his book he explains his secret!

Pollen is extremely rich in nutrients and plays a vital role in the miraculous relationship that has evolved between flowers and bees. "The Healing Powers of Pollen" examines the subject in all its detail and uncovers the secrets of this ancient food. Patrice Percie du Sert presents the results of documented scientific research on the properties of different kinds of pollen, and considers the beneficial effects of pollen in the context of a comprehensive review of environmental and especially dietary factors that affect our health.
